Axewomen pick up weekend sweep over Aigles Bleues

WOLFVILLE – The Acadia Axewomen picked up a weekend sweep over the Moncton Aigles Bleues with a 3-1 victory on Saturday afternoon.

After winning the first two sets 25-16 and 25-20, Acadia faltered in the third as Moncton picked up a 25-22 win. The Axewomen came back with a dominant start to the fourth, leading by as much as 10 points before Moncton clawed back to ultimately lose the set 25-20.

Acadia' player of the game, Alexia Lemay-Evans (Azilda, ON), finished the match with a game-high 13 kills, three service aces and 16 points. Jenna Guy (Port Williams, NS) had 10 kills, while Wesley-Ann Bailey (Ottawa, ON) and Jenna Lake (Conception Bay South, NL) had seven apiece.

The offence ran through Charlotte Dean (Mississauga, ON), who had 37 assists in the match and defensively had seven digs.

For the Axewomen defence, Bailey had a game-high four blocks, while Rebecca Dorsey (Toronto, ON) had 26 digs.

Moncton's offence was quarterbacked by Cassidy Martin (Dieppe, NB), the Aigles Bleues player of the game. She had 27 assists in the match.

Sara Chiasson (Pointe a Bouleau, NB) and Ivana Urquhart-Mladineo (Saint John, NB) led Moncton with nine kills.

Their defence saw Jasmine Allain (Richibucto, NB) and Chiasson each lead the team with 11 digs, while three players had a single block.

Next weekend the Axewomen had to Halifax on Friday for their lone match of the week against the Dalhousie Tigers. Moncton plays their only match in Fredericton on Sunday against the UNB Reds.
