Clarke scores in Tigers win

Clarke scores in Tigers win

The Tigers and Sea-Hawks split the weekend results after Dalhousie beat Memorial 1-0 on Sunday at King George V Park.

The Tigers were in control of the match early on, earning several free kicks and corners in the first 20 minutes. With Dalhousie's high, sustained press on Memorial in their end, the Sea-Hawks looked to counter quickly on the Tigers, sending several long balls over the top.  Through the first 45 minutes the Tigers racked up seven shots but were unable to capitalize on them. Neither team found success and headed into the locker room tied 0-0.

Dalhousie started the second half strong, forcing Sea-Hawks keeper Shannon Galway (St. John's, NL) to make a big save in 47th minute. The Sea-Hawks turned up-field after the stop and played Kate Hickey (Outer Cove, NL) in on the Tigers net. Goalkeeper Emily Toth (Markham, ON) came out to make the initial save, but gave up the rebound which Hickey put over the crossbar.

In the 56th minute The Tigers got a free kick outside the box which the Sea-Hawks manage to clear, but only as far as a waiting Olivia Jack (Stillwater Lake, NS). Jack took a crack on goal, hitting a looping ball in and forced a big save from the Memorial goalkeeper. On the following corner kick, Paris Axam (Ottawa, ON) put a low ball into the Memorial box forcing a scramble in front of the net. Kaitlyn Clarke (Edmonton, AB) was there for the Tigers and slots the ball home, putting the Tigers up 1-0.

The Tigers would hang on to the lead for the rest of the game, seeing out a mostly uneventful final 20 minutes.

Clarke was named the Tigers player of the game for her game winning goal.

The Tigers return to the field on Sunday, September 10 when they host Mount Allison in their home opener. Memorial travel to New Brunswick next weekend to face the UNB Reds on Friday, September 8 at 5pm AT.
