CIS exhibition - Huskies skate to 7-1 win over McGill Redmen

The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the McGill Redmen 7-1 in CIS hockey exhibition action at the Halifax Forum Saturday night.

The Huskies wasted no time getting on the board as Ben Duffy (Lower Sackville, NS) scored from in close at 1:29 to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead. The Redmen quickly responded when David Rose (St. Hubert, QC) scored with a wrist shot from the slot on the powerplay at 2:00 to tie the game at 1-1. Saint Mary's got the lead back when Jamie Doornbosch (Richmond Hills, ON) ripped a slapshot from the top of the faceoff circle into the net at 13:51 to make it 2-1.

The Huskies increased the lead when Austyn Hardie (Montreal, QC) potted a wrist shot from the point at 18:12 to make it 3-1 after the first period.

In the second period, Saint Mary's kept at it when Hardie tallied for a second time from inside the blue line at 14:28 to push the lead to 4-1 after 40 minutes. In the third, the Huskies continued their scoring spree when Gerrad Grant (Halifax, NS) put a 2 on 1 shorthanded wrister from the slot into the net at 3:09 to make it 5-1. At 9:07, Steven Beyers (Orangeville, ON) converted a one timer from the point on the powerplay to further the lead to 6-1. Duffy added extra insurance when he potted his second marker of the game from in close at 15:14.

The Huskies outshot the Redmen 36-28. Cole Cheveldave (Calgary, AB) made 27 saves to get the win in goal for the Huskies. Karel St. Laurent (St. Catherine, QC) stopped 29 shots for the Redmen.

The Huskies continue their exhibition schedule on Wednesday night against the Saint Francis Xavier X-Men in Bridgewater at 7:00 pm AST. The Redmen play their next exhibition game against the RMC Paladins on Saturday in Montreal at 5:00 pm EST.
