ANTIGONISH - The StFX X-Men wrapped up the AUS soccer regular season with a 4-1 win over the visiting Saint Mary's Huskies Sunday afternoon at Oland Stadium.
StFX marked senior day during the season finale at home by honouring fourth-year midfielder Michael Al-Assadi (Burnaby, BC), fourth-year defender Serge Dossou (Calgary, AB), fourth-year goalkeeper Nick Gillen (Whitehorse, YK), fifth-year midfielder Kareem Henry (Mississauga, ON), fourth-year defender Trevor Kwan (Calgary, AB) and fifth-year midfielder Randy Ribeiro (Cambridge, ON) for their contributions to the varsity program.
After the Huskies opened the scoring in the third minute on a marker from Alex Assali (Halifax, NS), the X-Men rallied with a pair of goals in the final five minutes of the first half to take a 2-1 advantage into the intermission.
In the 41st minute, Henry ripped a sizzling strike behind Saint Mary's goalkeeper Christian Oxner (Halifax, NS) to knot the match-up.
Just more than two minutes later, in the 43rd minute, sophomore defender Cole Suart (Ottawa, ON) made no mistake, capitalizing on a corner kick from Joe Ward (Newport South Wales, UK).
In the 59th minute, the Huskies had an opportunity for the equalizer, but Tyler Sellars (Moncton, NB) hit the goal post after getting possession off an X-Men turnover.
Gillen, the Subway player of the match, made a dazzling save off Dominik Gorski (Halifax, NS), who got his head on a free kick from Assali, the player of the match for the Huskies.
Off a free kick from sophomore midfielder Liam Elbourne (Halifax, NS), Ribeiro scored on a nifty header to make it 3-1 in the 72rd minute.
In the 79th minute, Henry - with his second of the match - wrapped up the scoring for the X-Men.
Gillen made five saves for the X-Men win, while Oxner turned aside seven shots for the Huskies
The X-Men end the season with a 4-6-3 record in seventh place, one spot out of AUS playoff contention. The Huskies (2-6-5) also did not qualify for the upcoming conference playoff tournament.
The Acadia Axemen will host the 2015 Subway AUS Women's Soccer Championship, from Nov. 5-8, in Wolfville.
