Farrell scores OT winner vs UNB

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - First year Axeman forward Kyle Farrell (Howie Center, N.S.) picked up a loose puck in front of the net and put it past UNB goaltender Alex Dubeau (Mascouche, Que.) for the overtime winner, as the CIS No. 6 ranked Acadia Axemen topped the No. 1 UNB Varsity Reds 4-3, ending the first place Varsity Reds' four game winning streak.

The win is the second time the Axemen captured an overtime victory against UNB in two meetings. At UNB, the Axemen picked up a 3-2 overtime shootout win over the V-reds.

The overtime victory is Acadia's fifth game beyond regulation and fourth win, while Farrell's overtime winner is his third overtime game winning goal of the season.

Acadia pounced on the V-Reds early with a powerplay goal by Subway second star of the game and second year forward Boston Leier (Saskatoon, Sask.) at the 5:04 mark of the first period.

Seven minutes later UNB's Jordan Murray (Riverview, N.B.) tied the game at one at 12:18 in the first frame, assisted by Rob Mignardi (Richmond Hill, Ont.).

Mignardi gave the Varsity Reds a 2-1 lead with three minutes remaining in the opening period. The man-advantage goal was the first allowed this season by the Axemen's penalty killing unit.

At 6:46 of the second period, Alex Wall (Mt. Pearl, Nfld.) scored UNB's second powerplay goal, giving the Varsity Reds a commanding 3-1 lead, but first year Axemen forward Daniel Pettersson (Toronto, Ont.) closed the margin by one with a late second frame goal. Pettersson shelfed the puck after a feed from Zachery Franko (Winnipeg, Man.) from below the faceoff circle.

Leier, who was named the Subway second star of the game, scored his second goal after a shot from the blueline by Liam Maaskant created a rebound that Leier patiently backhanded over a sprawling Dubeau to tie the game at three 11 minutes into the final period.

Farrell ended the game only 3:32 into the extra time, improving the Axemen to 7-2-1 with a 4-3 overtime win, while UNB falls to 8-0-2 and remains first place in the AUS standings.

Acadia will host the 5-5-2 UPEI Panthers tomorrow night and UNB travels to Halifax to take on the 5-4-1 Saint Mary's Huskies.
