(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS built 15-point lead through three quarters and hung on to beat the Saint Mary's Huskies, on Friday, in Halifax.

Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON) led the REDS, scoring 16 points and grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds, earning Subway Player of the Game honours.

The two sides played an even first quarter, ending the frame tied 17-17.

UNB pushed ahead in the second, holding the Huskies to just six points to take a 32-23 lead into the half-time break.

The REDS surge continued in the third quarter. UNB outscored the home team 14-8 to extend their lead to 46-31.

But the Huskies stormed back in the final quarter, scoring 29 points.

The REDS held firm, scoring 17 of their own and held on for the 63-60 victory.

"We were really pleased with our defensive effort," said REDS head coach Jeff Speedy. "Holding them to single digits for two consecutive quarters was the difference in the game. We needed the cushion that provided us, as they roared back in the fourth".

Katie McAffee (Lower Knoxford, NB) scored 16 for UNB, on what should've been an off night.

"She leads us offensively most nights and did so again tonight, all while battling food poisoning," said Speedy. "She had to visit a garbage can twice in the second half. She's so tough."

Kylee Speedy came off the REDS bench to score seven points.

Lucy Beaumont (Fredericton, NB) led the Huskies, scoring 13 points. Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON) had six rebounds.

The Huskies bench scored just seven point total, and Saint Mary's had a tough night with the ball, shooting with just over 27% efficiency.

With the win, the REDS improve to 2-and-1, good for a share of second place in the Atlantic University Sport standings. The Huskies are also 2-and-1.

The two teams conclude their weekend series on Saturday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00pm.
