Axewomen open weekend with decisive win over Capers

WOLFVILLE – Starting strong, the Acadia Axewomen (3-2) picked up a big 72-44 victory over the Cape Breton Capers (3-2) to open their weekend of back-to-back games against CBU at home.

It was a team effort for Acadia, with three of five starters finishing in double figures, two of which had double-doubles.

Player of the game Samantha Russell (Dartmouth, NS) had 19 points and 10 boards for the Axewomen, while Elizabeth Iseyemi (Dartmouth, NS) had 18 points and 11 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double of the season. Lisa Bolander (Uppsala, Sweden) led the team with 23 points.

Off the bench, Ryan George (Moncton, NB) led the Axewomen with 13 rebounds and four points.

For the Capers, Kiyara Letlow (Toronto, ON) had 11 points and a game-high 19 rebounds for her team's only double-double of the game.

The game-high in scoring came from Chermensa van la Parra (Rotterdam, Netherlands) who finished with 26 points.

As a team, Acadia shot 36.3 per cent from the floor compared to 26.2 per cent for Cape Breton, while the Capers were 63.6 per cent from the free throw line in comparison to 30 per cent for Acadia.

Saturday evening the teams meet again at 4 p.m.
