Axewomen remain undefeated with 90-74 win over X

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - After four regular season games, the Axewomen basketball team remain undefeated by delivering a convincing 90-74 win over the visiting StFX X-Women.

Second year guard Paloma Anderson (Phoenix, Arizona) posted a game high 27 points in the Axewomen's season home opener. Anderson, who is leading the AUS with an average 27 points per game, was complimented by senior post Allie Berry (Yarmouth, N.S.) who pulled down six rebounds, added 15 points and was 50% from the floor.

Rookie Alyson Fulton (Merigomish, N.S.) netted 17 points including a five for five from the three point arc in 21 minutes of play.

A dominating first quarter by the Axewomen was followed by a lull in the second. Ahead 30-8 after one frame on the back of 13 points scored by Anderson, Acadia allowed the X-Women to tie the second quarter 18-18.

Holding onto a 48-23 lead after one half, Acadia edged StFX 27-26 in third quarter play. Trailing by 75-49 after three frames, the X-Women rallied to close the gap to 16 by the end of the game. A fourth quarter 25-15 StFX win narrowed the Acadia lead from a game high 35 to 16 by the final buzzer.

Acadia head coach Len Harvey noted his team's inconsistency in the Axewomen win. "We had a struggle maintaining our focus for 40 minutes, which has been our Achilles heel so far this season", said Harvey. "Typically we have had weaker starts and strong finishes, but tonight was the exact opposite."

Lindsay Lessard (Waterloo, Ont.) grabbed the Subway Player of the Game honours with 26 points for StFX, while Acadia's Fulton was recognized as the Axewomen's Player of the Game for a great rookie effort.

"Paloma and Allie continue to be a tandem to be reckoned with, but Alyson was a huge bright spot for us today", pointed out Harvey when asked about the effort by the first year guard. "I was really excited to see her have the break out game that she had been waiting for."

Kolbi Roper (North Vancouver, B.C.) and Marcy Robinson (Bastrop, Louisiana) added 13 and 16 points respectively for the X-Women's losing effort, while Kelsey Rice (Beaver Bank, N.S.), Emily MacLeod (Fredericton, N.B.) and Chanel Smith (Halifax, N.S.) each had seven points for the Axewomen.

The Axewomen will have test this Saturday night as they host the 3-2 Dalhousie Tigers, while the X-Women hope to pick up their first win next Saturday November 28 as they host Dalhousie in Antigonish.
