Huskies top Axewomen to sweep opening weekend

WOLFVILLE – The defending AUS champion Saint Mary's Huskies topped the Acadia Axewomen 76-61 on Saturday night in Wolfville to sweep the opening weekend of AUS action.

Lucina Beaumont led the game with 34 points for the Huskies, nearing a double-double as she finished with nine boards. Clara Gascoigne also finished in double digits, scoring 10 for Saint Mary's.

Defensively, away from the glass, the Huskies looked to Alaina McMillan's five steals to create opportunities.

Acadia had three players in double digits, led by Elizabeth Iseyemi's 21 points and 12 rebounds. She also had three assists and three steals in the game.

Bianca Helmig and Rio Yamazaki finished the night with 11 and 10 points respectively.

The Axewomen will now host the Dalhousie Tigers on Wednesday night, while Saint Mary's travels to Cape Breton to face the Capers on Friday and Saturday.
