X-Men shutout Huskies in final home game

Antigonish, N.S. - The StFX X-Men (8-1-3) ended their regular season home schedule with a 4-0 shut-out win over the Saint Mary's Huskies (1-9-2) in AUS soccer action Wednesday night at StFX Stadium.

The home side jumped to a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

In the fifth minute, freshman forward Tane Caubo (London, England) opened the scoring on a long strike on goal.

Freshman defender Josh Read (Bath, England) doubled the advantage, in the 24th minute, on an assist from junior wingback Felix Hoppe (Calgary, AB) as his header off a corner kick beat Huskies goalkeeper Liam Bitar (Charlottetown, PEI).

Fourth-year forward Dylan Lawrence (Ottawa, ON), on senior night, tallied back-to-back goals, in the 73rd and 85 minutes, to give the X-Men a 4-0 lead. Caubo assisted on the first of the two markers.

Lawrence garnered Subway player of the match honours, while freshman defender Jonathon Wentzell (Halifax, NS) received top-player nod for the Huskies.

The X-Men outshot the Huskies 31-3. Junior Thomas Pieroway (Conception Bay, NL) made one save for the win, while Bitar had 12 stops in the loss.  

Both teams will wrap-up the AUS regular season later this week. The Huskies will host the rival Dalhousie Tigers Friday, Oct. 28, at 7:15 p.m. On Saturday, Oct. 29, the X-Men will travel to Sydney to face the rival Cape Breton University Capers. Kick-off is set for 3:15 p.m.

Playing in their final regular season home game for the X-Men were senior athletes James Fitzpatrick, Dylan Lawrence, Felix Hoppe, Natneal Tecle, Matt Lannan, Everett Cockell, Alex Taylor, along with student therapist Simon Murphy.
