Axemen finish regular season in third place

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - A convincing 4-0 win over the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus placed the Acadia Axemen into a third place finish in the AUS standings as the regular season concluded at home in Wolfville.

Third year striker Matthew Berrigan scored two goals including the first goal and eventual game winner 11 minutes into the first half. Cochrane Noseworthy Smith netted the second goal with 12 minutes remaining in the opening half.

Berrigan scored his second goal of the game and eighth of the season with under three minutes remaining in the first half to give Acadia a 3-0 lead into the intermission. Berrigan finished the season as the Axemen's leading scorer with eight goals followed by senior striker and today's Subway Player of the Game Cochrane Noseworthy Smith.

An own goal at the 53 minute mark was the last goal scored against the Aigles Bleus, giving Acadia a 4-0 win in their closing game of the regular season.

Tied with the UPEI Panthers with 23 points in the final standings, the tie-breaking formula includes head to head play of which the Axemen and Panthers tied 1-1 in Charlottetown. The next tie-breaking formula position is a points differential between points scored and points allowed. The Axemen topped UPEI with a differential of 11 compared to the Panther's 3 points.

Acadia's third place finish in the standings, the best since the return of the team nine years ago will match the third seeded Axemen against the sixth seeded Dalhousie Tigers in quarterfinal play on Thursday, November 5th at 7:15 pm in the opening day of the AUS Men's Championships hosted by Acadia.
