Tigers edge Huskies 4-3

(Halifax, NS) In AUS women's hockey action, the Saint Mary's Huskies fell 4-3 to their cross-town rivals the Dalhousie Tigers Halifax Forum. Dalhousie dominated the first two periods and were able to hold on in the third against a strong Saint Mary's offence to get the win.

The Tigers scored on their first shot of the night at the 4:15 mark. After a turnover at the half wall in the Saint Mary's zone, Dal's Danika Phillips (Barrie, ON) drew the SMU defense down low, leaving Amy Wilson (Mississauga, ON) alone in the slot. Goalie Ashley Forler (Kitchener, ON) didn't have much of a chance as the Tigers took a 1-0 lead. Taylor Carr-Babineau (Moncton, NB) also got an assist.

The Huskies had a scoring change when Brooke Murphy (Balla Philip, NB) sent a low shot that hit the post, but it would be the Tigers who found the back of the net again with less than a minute left in the period.

A turnover in the neutral zone led to a 3 on 1 against Saint Mary's. Brooklyn Paisley (Shawnigan Lake, BC) sent a saucer pass to Phillips, who made no mistake and wired a shot over the shoulder of Forler to take a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Saint Mary's put lots of pressure on the Tigers in the opening minutes of the second period and Mary MacDonald (Calgary, AB) scored her first goal of the season at 4:29. Standing at nearly the goal line, her low shot went off the far post and in.

Dalhousie responded quickly though, scoring less than three minutes later. A shot from the point from Natalie Stanwood (West Vancouver, BC) was deflected on its way to the net. Keana Oshowy (Woodbridge, ON) controlled the bouncing rebound and put it in the net for the Tigers.

The Tigers added another goal in the second half of the period on a two on one. Philips passed the puck to Wilson, who got her second goal of the night with a backhand shot.

Rebecca Clark (Keswick, ON) came in for the Huskies. The period ended with the Tigers up 4-1.

Relentless pressure by the Huskies in the third period drew them within one goal of the Tigers.

On the power play, the rebound from a sharp angle shot went out front to Miranda Hatt (Eastern Passage, NS) of the Huskies, who shot the puck into an empty net. Taylor Keeping (Hackett's Cove, NS) and Kaitlin Howarth (Thunder Bay, ON) assisted.

The Huskies had the edge in scoring chances and shots, with the Tigers able to muster only two shots on net in the final frame. Fabiana Petricca (Woodbridge, ON) played very well for the Tigers, facing 17 shots in the third period.

With just under three minutes to go, Sydney England (Chamcook, NB) got a nice pass from Siobhan Birch (Mississauga, ON) behind the net and scored. Murphy also got an assist on the play.

Saint Mary's pulled their goalie but were unable to find the equalizing goal as the game ended 4-3 in favour of Dal.

The Subway Player of the Game with two goals was Amy Wilson.

Next up, Saint Mary's travels to StFX tomorrow,  while Dalhousie travels to play St. Thomas on November 16.
