WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Axewomen soccer team rebounded from a disappointing loss to the first place Cape Breton Capers on Friday with a 5-1 win against the visiting Moncton Aigles Bleus.
Subway Player of the Game, Brittany Taylor, who scored the Axewomen's first goal, noted that the loss to the Capers pushed the team to come out strong today.
"We had a strong second half against Cape Breton and it motivated us to come back and push harder. We wanted to come out and play like we have been practicing. We played well together and did what coach asked us to do and we played strong as a team and it worked out well for us," said Taylor.
Defender Emily Nickerson grabbed a big rebound off of Moncton keeper Dominique and put it top corner from at least 30 yards out to give the Axewomen a 2-0 lead 30 minutes into the match.
Fifth year veteran midfielder, Katie Ross, scored in the opening minute of the second half of the game on a penalty kick to give Acadia a 3-0 advantage.
Finally, 62 minutes into the game, Moncton's Katrine LeBlanc's corner kick squeaked past Acadia keeper Sarah Charnock after deflecting off the leg of teammate Holly Buckler.
Five minutes after the Aigles Bleus goal, Acadia's Holly Buckler netter her first goal of the year, assisted by Meghan Earle.
Allie Scovil scored the best goal of the afternoon at the 76 minute mark off of a header near the far side post.
The win gives the Axewomen 3-2-1 record, while the Aigles Bleus drop to 2-3-1. Moncton hosts the Mount Allison Mounties and the Axewomen head to Halifax to take on Saint Mary's both on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. before the Thanksgiving break.
