Huskies survive scare with 58-53 win over UNB Friday night

(Halifax, NS)--In a battle of unbeaten teams Friday night, the USports No. 8 ranked Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the UNB Varsity Reds 58-53 in AUS women's basketball action.

 

Jenny Lewis (Fall River, NS) paced the Huskies with 14 points, with seven coming in the final frame.

 

UNB led 20-11 after 10 minutes.

 

SMU clawed back in the second quarter, outscoring UNB 16-13 and trailed the VReds 33-27 at the half.

 

Famous for third quarter spurts, the Huskies used a 14-10 quarter to pull within two, 43-41 after thirty minutes.

 

A 9-1 Huskies run to start the fourth quarter gave the Huskies their first lead since the 7-minute mark in the first quarter at 50-44.

 

Both teams traded buckets and SMU added three more points for a 55-46 lead with under four minutes to play.

 

A 5-0 UNB run pulled the VReds to within four, 55-51 before Saint Mary's closed out the quarter 58-53.

 

Saint Mary's improves to 5-0 while UNB falls to 4-1.

 

Hannah Currie (Collingwood, ON) led all scorers and UNB with 18 points on 9 for 11 shooting while pulling down nine rebounds.

 

Laura Kaye (Fredericton, NB) added 13 points and four assists for UNB while Mikaela Dodig (Bolton, Ont.) had seven.

 

Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, Que.) added 13 rebounds and eight rebounds for Saint Mary's while teammates Angelina Carvery (Halifax, NS) had 10 while Shanieka Wood (Ajax, Ont.) had 11 rebounds.

 

Both teams return to action Saturday November 19th when UNB visits 1-4 Acadia and the Huskies host 2-3 UPEI.

 

Tip-off for both games is 6 p.m.
