(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS got standout performances from Jayda Veinot (Port Williams, NS) and Erin Ingalls (St. George, NB) in an 84-57 win over the Cape Breton Capers in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action Sunday afternoon at UNB's Richard J. Currie Center.

Veinot, who scored a game-high 28 points, was named the Tim Horton's Player of the Game.

"It feels really good," she said of the win. "We really wanted it because they got us in the first semester, so just confidence-wise we really wanted to prove to ourselves we could do that."

In an entertaining first quarter, the teams went back and forth, neither able to build a significant lead.

Down by three with about four minutes to play, Veinot drove through the key to score on a lay-up and draw the foul. She connected on the ensuing free throw to tie the score 10-10.

UNB led 17-14 after one quarter.

In the second, after UNB went up 19-14, the Capers responded with a 10-0 run, taking a five-point lead, and prompting a REDS timeout.

UNB then used a 10-0 run of their own, over the last 2:55 of the quarter, to take a 38-27 lead to the half-time break.

The REDS employed a balanced attack in the third quarter to maintain a decent lead on the Capers. UNB led 54-41 through 30 minutes.

While the Capers pushed back throughout, they could not overcome the REDS, and UNB scored the 84-57 victory.

"Right until the end, we had to play as hard as we could," said Veinot.

Ingalls registered a double-double, with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

"It's an amazing team to play on," added Veinot. "Anybody could have their night on any night, and I think that means we approach the game with less stress because you know that if it's not your night, the ball is not going in for you, somebody, it'll be their night."

Kiyara Letlow (Toronto, ON) led the Capers with 13 points, while Darah Fleurgin (Montreal, QC) came off the bench to grab 11 rebounds.

Amanda Cruickshank (Montreal, QC) and Hannah Smith (Bedford, NS) each scored 10.

With the win, the REDS improve to 13-2, good for first place in the AUS.

Cape Breton is 5-11 and seventh in the standings.

The Capers now prepare to visit the STFX X-Women on Saturday. Game time is scheduled for 6:00pm.

The REDS go on the road too, to Saint Mary's for a Friday night tilt. Tip-off is 6:00pm.
