Thunder Selects Day Two - Huskies top Carleton 56-54

(Halifax, N.S.)—Day Two of the Thunder Selects Women's Basketball Tournament continued from Saint Mary's University and saw the Huskies defeat the Carleton Ravens 56-54 in one of three games Thursday.

 

Angelina Carvery (Halifax, N.S.) had 18 points for the Huskies who trailed 16-13 after 10 minutes. A 13-9 second quarter score had SMU controlling a slim 26-25 halftime lead.

 

Saint Mary's outscored Carleton 11-10 in the third quarter and led 37-35 heading into the final frame. Both teams were even in the fourth at 19-19 and the Huskies won 56-54.

 

Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, Que.) finished with 11 points for Saint Mary's while Jasmine Cain (Halifax, N.S.) had nine off the bench.

 

Ottawa native Heather Lindsay led the Ravens with 18 points while Catherine Trarer (Chelsea, Que.) and Nicole Gilmore (Hamilton, Ont.) finished with 10 points and eight rebounds apiece.

 

Earlier action Thursday afternoon saw the McMaster Marauders defeat the Dalhousie Tigers 74-55.  Danielle Boiago led all scorers with 21 points in McMaster's victory.

 

Rachel Holmes (Ancaster, Ont.) finished with 11 points while teammate Jelena Mamic (St. Catherines, Ont.) had eight points for McMaster, who outscored Dalhouse 14-8 after 10 minutes.

 

The Marauders added to their cushion with a 22-17 second quarter score and took a 36-25 lead at half.  A 19-16 third quarter score saw McMaster up 55-41 after thirty minutes.

 

McMaster outscored Dalhousie 19-14 in the final frame to win 74-55.

 

Roberta Charles (Montreal, Que.) paced Dal with 16 points while Michele Tchiakoua (Yaounde, Cameroon) had nine points and Karina May (Moncton, N.B.) eight.

 

The night cap game saw the Acadia Axewomen upend the Queen's University Gaels 73-52.

 

Paloma Anderson (Phoenix, Arizona) paced the Axewomen with 30 points while Alexandra Berry (Yarmouth, N.S.) had 15 while Katie Ross (Bedford, N.S.) nine.

 

Acadia led 15-11 after 10 minutes and a 24-20 second quarter score saw the Axewomen up 39-31 at half.

 

After thirty minutes Acadia extended their lead to 61-45 and a 12-7 final frame saw the Axewomen hold on for the 73-52 victory.

 

Marianne Alarie (Sudbury, Ont.) had 14 points for the Gaels while Myriam Fontaine (Cornwall, Ont.) finished with 10 and Bridget Mulholland (Kingston, Ont.) nine.

 

The final day of play of the Thunder Selects Women's Basketball Tournament concludes Friday with three afternoon games.

 

Friday, December 30th:

 

12 noon Saint Mary's vs. McMaster

2 p.m. Dalhousie vs. Queen's

4 p.m. Acadia vs. Carleton
