Huskies double the Panthers 4-2 at home

(Halifax, NS) The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the UPEI Panthers 4-2 in AUS men's hockey action Saturday night at the Halifax Forum. The game was played before a crowd of 275.

The two teams didn't find the net in the first period. In the second period, the Panthers quickly broke the deadlock when Derek Ryckman (Red Deer, AB) scored from in close as he slid into the net at 1:02 to make it 1-0. UPEI got on the board again when Chad Labelle (Calgary, AB) tallied when his shot from the circle went off the post and in at 10:21 to increase the lead to 2-0. The Huskies got one back when Subway player of the game Mitchell Maynard (Cole Harbour, NS) potted a shorthanded marker from the circle at 11:46 to make it 2-1 after two periods. In the third, the Huskies lit the lamp immediately when Bradley Greene (Tilting, NL) scored from in close after cutting in front at 0:26 to tie things up at 2-2. The Huskies took the lead when Gerrad Grant (Halifax, NS) tallied on a wrap around at 3:21 to make the score 3-2. The Huskies added some insurance when Stephen MacAulay (Cole Harbour, NS) potted an empty net marker to seal the win.

The Huskies outshot the Panthers 30-21. Marc Terriault (Montreal, QC) made 19 saves to get the win for the Huskies. Matt Mahalak (Monrow, MI) stopped 26 shots in goal for the Panthers.

Both teams are back in action this Wednesday. Saint Mary's visits the Dalhousie Tigers at 7:00 pm and the Panthers host the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleus at 7.
