Axemen hand CIS No. 5 StFX first loss of season

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axemen soccer team improved to 6-1-1 with a convincing hard fought 2-0 win over the CIS No. 5 ranked StFX X-Men, capping off Homecoming weekend at Acadia.

The Axemen struck early at the 22 minute when Travis Fenning (Ottawa, Ont.) assisted on a Tylor Connolly (Quisspamsis, N.B.) eventual game winning goal.

The Axemen edged the X-Men with nine shots compared to StFX's eight, but Acadia tested X-Men keeper Thomas Pieroway (Conception Bay, Nfld.) with six shots.  Acadia's Nigel Goodwin made four stops for the Axemen.

Acadia's second goal came at the 67 minute in the second half when Matthew Berrigan (Halifax, N.S.) picked up his seventh goal of the season on a mishandled ball by Pieroway.

Axemen head coach Findlay MacRae pointed out that this week's practice focused on several important aspects of possession and pressure.

"We trained very hard all week in preparation knowing we wanted to dominate the ball in possession and work hard to get it back out of the possession", pointed out MacRae. "Once we had possession we used it well to keep them under pressure."

StFX had limited success due to the defensive effort of Subway Player of the Game Ryan Parris (Pembroke, Bahamas) and veteran defender Andrew Snyder (Bridgewater, N.S.). The X-Men's Dan Hayfield (Exeter, UK) earned StFX's Player of the Game.

The Axemen host the Dalhousie Tigers this Friday night.  Acadia's one tie came from a 2-2 deadlock against the Tigers on October 2.

StFX X-Men travel to Mount Allison this Friday and then continue into N.B. to take on UNB on Saturday.
