Axewomen clinch playoff berth with 2-0 win over X

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – The Axewomen soccer team put a strong game together and handed the visiting StFX X-Women a 2-0 loss.

All goals came in the opening half.

The first goal came at the hands of third year striker Jenna Boudreau who worked past the defender in the 18 yard box and picked up a lose ball for a one-time kick past StFX keeper Erin Visser 19 minutes into the opening half.

Senior midfielder Katie Ross scored the Axewomen's second goal on a penalty kick assessed to Axewomen after Boudreau was taken down by an X-Women as she broke for the net. Ross' kick was at mid-level and to the right of the keeper who dove in vain for the well placed boot.

"We played well and stayed discipline", said Axewomen head coach Amit Batra.

The Axewomen out-shot StFX 13-4, with Visser making six saves, while her Acadia counter-part Spencer Skinner, stopped two shots for the shut-out.

The Axewomen improve to 6-3-2 and clinch a playoff berth and sit in third place in the AUS standings, two points ahead of the Dalhousie Tigers who have two remaining games in their regular season, compared to Acadia's one remaining game against UPEI.

"Our whole goal was to try and peak at the right time of year. We've often started out really well, but the key is how we finish. We've had a solid season and look to keep improving every game," noted Batra.

As for the defending AUS champions, StFX drops to 5-4-3 and will sit and wait for the season to conclude to find out where they stand in post-season play

"They have some injuries, but I wouldn't take any credit away from our team tonight", concluded Batra.

The Axewomen take on UPEI on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3:00 p.m. in their last regular season game of 2017.
