Tigers fall to Sea-Hawks

The Memorial Sea-Hawks defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 75-51 Saturday night at Dalplex.

Alana Short (Barrie, ON) scored with a 3-pointer from the right wing to open the scoring.

Eva Widmeyer (Dartmouth, NS) responded the next play, dribbling into the mid-range and swishing the jumper.

With just above six minutes left of the first quarter, Sarah Valley (Regina, SK) hit a 3-pointer. Dal trailed 11-9.

Hannah Green (Flatrock, NL) then hit a corner 3-pointer, giving Memorial a 14-9 lead.

Laura Murray (St. John's, NL) went strong to the rack, finishing with her left hand. Memorial took a 20-11 lead with under four minutes left of the quarter.

Memorial took a 25-13 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Simona Matic (Belgrade, Serbia) scored the first basket of the second quarter with a right-handed finish over the Memorial defender while falling.

Anna Parsons (Calgary, AB) hit a 3-pointer on the right wing to cut the lead to nine points.

Memorial would continue to score. Short hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to give the Sea-Hawks a 33-19 lead with five minutes left.

Brooke LeDevehat (Mount Pearl, NL) hit two 3-pointers in the final minutes of the second quarter. The last one came at the end of the quarter from the top of the key, giving Memorial a 46-26 lead.

Kaitlyn Ferrier (Calgary, AB) opened the scoring in the third quarter with a right-hand finish off the glass to bring Dal within 18 points.

LeDevehat responded with a drive herself for Memorial's first points of the quarter.

With just under eight minutes left of the quarter, LeDevehat scored again on a layup. Memorial led 51-28.

Ferrier dribbled past her defender and made a mid-range jumper with under six minutes left of the quarter. Dal trailed by 19 points.

Claire Hickman (St. John's, NL) put the Sea-Hawks up by 20 once again later in the quarter. 

The point differential would remain the same, with Memorial leading 61-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

Sarah-Kim Côté (Drummondville, QC) opened the scoring for the Sea-Hawks in the fourth quarter with a left-handed layup, scoring the and-one.

Moments later, Widmeyer stepped back for a 3-pointer as Dal trailed 68-44.

Short scored 14 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and grabbed five steals in the victory, winning player of the game.

The Tigers head to UPEI next Saturday to take on the UPEI Panthers at 6pm.

Memorial plays on Feb. 9, when they take on the Cape Breton Capers at 6pm at Cape Breton University.
