Huskies top UNB 2-1

(HALIFAX, N.S.)—The Saint Mary's  Huskies scored late goals in each half to defeat the visiting UNB Reds 2-1 in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action on Sunday afternoon from Huskies Stadium.

Abby Sullivan (Orleans, Massachusetts), with an assist from Clarisse Ramirez (Ottawa, Ont.) opened the scoring in the 12thminute with a move off her left foot to her right and beat SMU keeper Kyanna Gilks (Halifax, NS) for the 1-0 lead.

SMU found the back of the net in the 40thminute off a giveaway from UNB in a whacky sequence of events. A SMU cross found the foot of midfielder Paige Vincent (Dartmouth, NS) whose shot was saved up off the crossbar by UNB keeper Rebecca Duda who was beat on a tap in from Anna Erikson (Invermere, BC).

Julia Dorey (Halifax, NS), added an insurance goal with help from Hannah Lawrence (Halifax, NS) for Saint Mary's in the 83rdminute, as she beat Duda just inside the box as UNB's defence was calling for an offsides.

Gilks finished with nine saves for SMU while Duda had five for UNB in the loss.

SMU improves to 4-4-1 (13 points) with the win and UNB falls to 2-7-1 (7 points) on the year.

Both teams return to action next weekend when SMU hosts Moncton October 19 and UNB hosts Mount Allison October 20.
