Memorial takes two over Huskies

Halifax, NS)—The SMU Huskies lost their last two home games of the year over the weekend to the Memorial Seahawks in AUS women's volleyball action.

The 10-7 Seahawks finish with 20 points, good for second-place and earned a bye into the semi-finals of the 2016 Subway AUS Women`s Volleyball Championship hosted by Acadia University February 26th- 28th in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

The 5-12 Huskies end the regular season in fourth-place with 10 points and play fifth-seed 4-13 Moncton Friday at 4:30pm.

Saturday night saw Memorial hold off the host Huskies 3-2 (26-24, 25-20, 20-25, 24-26, 15-8).

Jill Snow (Bishop's Fall, NL) led the Seahawks and all hitters with 22 kills (5e 52ta .327) in the five set match while teammate Kristen Fey (Selkirk, MB) added 20 kills (1e 50ta .380).

Maddie Clark (Moncton, MB) paced the Huskies with 15 kills in the loss (2e 34ta .382) and Erin Smith (Ottawa, ON) added 13 kills (4e 32ta .281).

Memorial had kill advantages in the first and last sets (15-12 and 8-3) with SMU having kill advantages in the middle sets (16-12, 15-14, 18-15).

In the Sunday afternoon matinee, Memorial battled back, winning the last three sets for the 3-2 match win.

Set scores included (21-25, 19-25, 25-19, 25-22, 15-11with Snow pacing Memorial with 21 kills (8e 46ta .283) and teammate Krista Hogan (Kippens, NL) had 12 kills.

Smith and Clarke led the Huskies with double-digit kills in the loss, 13 and 10 respectively.

Fifth-year roster player Tessa Michaels was honoured before the game in her final home game for Saint Mary`s.  The #4 Huskies will face #5UdeM in the AUS playoffs next Friday at 4:30 hosted by Acadia University.
