Huskies hand Axewomen 3-1 loss

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - With recent wins against Saint Mary's Huskies and Moncton, the Volleyball Axewomen fall to 7-9 with a 3-1 loss to the visiting Huskies.

Huskie Erin Smith (Moncton, N.B.) captured the Subway Player of the Game honour with a team leading hitting percentage of 0.421 that included nine kills.

Out to an early 4-0 lead in the first set, the Axewomen allowed the Huskies to take a 14-11 lead on the back of three Jamie Rourke kills. Saint Mary's would take a 1-0 match lead on a 25-17 first set victory.

Acadia rebounded with a tight 25-21 second set win over the Huskies. With the lead changing hands four times during the game, the Axewomen took the last lead change at 18-17 on a Marissa Chin service ace.

The Axewomen fought from behind in the third set, after trailing the Huskies 10-6. Tied at 15, the Huskies pushed out to an eventual 23-21 third set win.

The Huskies dominated Acadia after tying the eventual final set at four. Saint Mary's would hold onto the lead for the entire fourth game and celebrated the 3-1 match win with a 24-17 fourth set victory.

Huskie standouts Maddie Clarke (Ottawa, Ont.) and Lindsay Donovan London, Ont.) each posted six kills. Team digs were shared amongst five individuals who posted double digit digs.

Kill efficiency was low for both teams, with Acadia posting a dismal -0.017, while the Huskies bettered Acadia with 0.015.

First year outside hitter Lauryn Renzella (Stouffville, Ont.) was named Acadia's Subway Player of the Game with 10 kills and 12 digs along with a service ace. AUS kill leader Sarah Ross (Toronto, Ont.) posted an unusually low six kills.

Acadia sits third in the AUS standings with 14 points, while the Huskies who have three games in hand,  trail the Axewomen with eight points.

Acadia will prepare for their final match on Sunday, February 21st at 2:00 pm by hosting the first place Dalhousie Tigers. Saint Mary's will be wrap up the regular season with a road trip to UNB and Moncton and then conclude the regular season at home against Memorial on February 20 & 21.
