Sea-Hawks drop opener to UNB

(St. John's, NL) – The UNB Varsity Reds opened their season on a winning note, but defeating the Memorial Sea-Hawks by a score of 65-52 on Saturday night at The Field House. 

The Varsity Reds secured the victory behind a balanced scoring attack with three players registering double digits.  Hannah Currie and Grace Wade both led the way with 14 points each, while Nicole LaFleur chipped in with 13 points.

Currie got out to a quick start for the Varsity Reds dropping 8 points in the first quarter of action, which provided them with a 32-26 halftime advantage.

Memorial would fight back throughout the second half narrowing the Varsity Reds lead to single digits on multiple occasions. 

Sydney Stewart was the high scorer for the Sea-Hawks finishing with 18 points, while adding 3 steals.  Memorial also received a strong performance from Graciela Diaz Brito who finished the game with 9 points, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists in a losing effort.

The Sea-Hawks and Reds were well matched in multiple categories, as both forced 27 turnovers, with the Varsity Reds outscoring the Sea-Hawks 22-20 on points off turnovers. 

The Varsity Reds were able to win the game based on a +13 rebounding differential and also being +9 on made free throws.

Both teams are back in action tomorrow afternoon at 12:00pm at The Field House.  The game can also be watched live on www.AUStv.ca
