DAL tops SMU 3-1 in Sunday volleyball action

(HALIFAX, NS)—The Saint Mary's Huskies dropped a tough match to the Dalhousie Tigers in four sets on Sunday afternoon in AUS women's volleyball action from the Homburg Centre.

The Tigers took the match 3-1 with set scores of 25-23, 26-28, 25-21, 25-7 over the host Huskies.

Outside hitter Mieke DuMont (Kamloops, BC) and middle blocker Erin Smith each had 13 kills apiece for Dalhousie and SMU respectively in the match.

In the early part of the first set, with DAL leading 9-5, a quick 3-0 run by Saint Mary's brought the Huskies to within one, at 10-9.  Ties at 15-15 and 17-17 saw both teams trade points down the stretch with Dal closing out the set on an 8-6 run and taking it 25-23.

Tied 9-9 in the second set, the Huskies used an 8-0 spurt to lead 17-9 and 24-21 late in the set. The Tigers battled back on a 4-0 run and took the lead 25-24. The Huskies used a 2-0 run themselves and led 26-25 before a point by DAL tied the match at 26-26. Two Saint Mary's points ended the set 28-26.

Dalhouse took leads of 3-1, 10-5, 15-12 and 20-17 before Saint Mary's mounted a slight come back late in the third set. A 4-1 spurt by SMU saw the Huskie trail 22-21 and it was the closest they would come in the set. A 3-0 run by Dal closed the set out 25-21.

The fourth set saw DAL take leads of 5-2, 10-3 and 20-6. A 5-0 Tigers run closed out the set 25-7 and the match 3-1 for the Tigers, who improve to 3-0 on the year while Saint Mary's drops to 1-2.

Both teams are in action next weekend when the 0-3 UNB Varsity Reds visit Dalhouse November 11th at 6 pm and Saint Mary's November 12th at 2 pm.
