Varsity Reds Edge Huskies 6-5

(Halifax, NS)  The UNB Varsity Reds defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 6-5 in AUS men's hockey action Friday night at the Halifax Forum. 

UNB got on the board first when Phillipe Maillet (Terrebonne, QC) scored from the circle off a rebound at 8:48 to make it 1-0. The Huskies immediately responded when Stephen MacAulay tallied from a one timer from the circle at 8:55 to tie things up at 1-1. Saint Mary's went ahead when Gerrad Grant (Halifax, NS) potted a marker from in close off a nice pass to make it 2-1. UNB got one back when Francis Beauvillier (St. Hyacinthe, QC) scored from in close at 12:51 to tie it up at 2-2 after the first period. In the second period, Saint Mary's took the lead when Anthony Repaci (Toronto, ON) tallied from the slot off a beautiful pass from behind the net on the powerplay at 4:20 to make the score 3-2. The Varsity Reds answered when Jordan Murray (Riverview, NB) potted a marker off a nice pass from the behind the net on the powerplay at 12:22 to make things even at 3-3. UNB went ahead when Beauvillier found the back of the net for the second time off some nice cycle passing on a 5 on 3 powerplay at 18:45 to make the score 4-3 after two periods. In the third, the Huskies got one back when Ben Duffy (Lower Sackville, NS) lit the lamp off a nice backhand on the powerplay at 1:02 to tie it up at 4-4. The Varsity Reds went ahead when Subway player of the game Phillipe Halley (Quebec City, QC) scored off a backhand at 5:57 to make it 5-4. Saint Mary's seemingly ensured that the game would be sent into overtime when MacAulay got his second of the game from the circle at 19:04 to tie it up at 5-5. The Varsity Reds stopped this assumption in dramatic fashion when Halley got his second of the game on a wrap around at 19:57 to put an end to a tense and exciting game.

The Varsity Reds outshot the Huskies 31-21. Alex Dubeau (Mascouche, QC) made 16 saves to get the win for the Varsity Reds. Marc Terriault (Montreal, QC) stopped 25 shots in goal for the Huskies.

Both teams are right back in action tomorrow. The Varsity Reds visit the Acadia Axemen at 7:00 pm and the Huskies host the UPEI Panthers at 7.
