Wolfville, N.S. – The Acadia Axemen (8-3-1) defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleus (1-8-2) 6-1 on Friday night in Wolfville, thanks to a strong performance from third star of the night, goalie Dawson Carty and an offensive outburst that saw the Axemen scored four goals in the second period.
Acadia jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to Subway First Star of the Game, Stephen Harper, who got the only marker of the period.
Harper scored on a one-timer, taking a pass from forward Kyle Farrell, who almost did the splits to stay onside to make the goal happen in the first place.
The Axemen had a chance to add to their lead, when Sam Fioretti was taken down while coming in on a partial breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. Fioretti failed to score on the penalty shot.
Acadia had an offensive explosion in the second, scoring four goals, two of them on the power-play, to take a 5-0 lead into the third.
The Axemen scored two goals within the first two minutes of the second frame, off a quick power-play goal by Stephen Harper for his second of the night and an easy chip-in by Chance Braid to make it 3-0.
Braid added another goal in the period, this time on the power-play, with a hard wrist shot from the top of the left circle, into the top right corner of the Aigles Bleus net to make it 4-0.
Following Braid's second goal, Moncton made a goalie change, pulling Thibeau in favor of Alexi Thibaudeau. Thibeau turned aside 10 of 14 shots while he was in net.
Axemen forward Ryan Foss scored perhaps the easiest goal of his career, going around the Moncton net, where the puck was laying uncovered on the goal-line, to tap the puck in and make it 5-0.
Acadia added another power-play marker in the third, this time from a wrist shot in tight by Remy Giftopoulos to make it 6-0.
Moncton broke Carty's chance of a shutout with 3:25 left in the third, when Aigles Bleus forward Samuel LeBlanc scored on a wrap-around to make it 6-1.
The second star of the night was Moncton forward Alexis Roy.
Axemen goaltender Dawson Carty turned aside 25 of 26 shots, while Aigles Bleus goalie Alexi Thibaudeau stopped 16 of 18 shots.
The Axemen take to the ice again on Wed. Nov. 15 against the Saint Mary's Huskies before returning home on Friday Dec. 1 to take on the UPEI Panthers. Puck drop for both games is 7:00pm.
