The UPEI Panthers earned a hard fought point in a 1-1 draw with the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues Friday night.
Caitlyn McCloskey was the lone scorer for the Panthers (1-1-1), while Aleksis Roy added one late for the Aigles Bleues (0-2-1) to steal a point away from the home team.
The game got off to a slow start and it wasn't until the 30th minute when the first real scoring opportunity occurred. Grace Veinotte hauled down a player in the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty shot for Moncton. Alexandra Roy was asked to take the shot but couldn't connect, as she fired it over the crossbar to keep the game knotted up at zero.
About 10 minutes later, UPEI made them pay and took the lead on a low shot from McCloskey after Emily Cormier's initial attempt was blocked, leading to a clear shot for the veteran striker.
Moncton came out of the break strong and eventually found the equalizer in the 74th minute. The Aigles Bleus took a Panther goal kick and booted it right back to Zoe Brockbank who headed it forward to Aleksis, who then beat goalkeeper Claudia Mazzei to the ball and snuck it by her.
McCloskey was named the UPEI Player of the Game, while Aleksis earned the accolade for Moncton.
The two teams will meet up again in Moncton Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
