Tigers defeat Aigles Bleues 5-1

Game recap by: Nathan Cooper

(HALIFAX, NS) The Dalhousie Tigers (1-3-1) hosted the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues (2-3) in some Saturday night AUS hockey action. The Tigers offensive abilities were shown on display, as the women went on to defeat the Aigles Bleues 5-1.

Tigers centre Elizabeth Klimm (West Kelowna) won the opening faceoff and the game was underway. The Tigers worked the puck very well early as Lauren Ellerton (Toronto, ON) bagged the first goal of the game, with assists coming from Katrina Mitton (Brantford, ON) and Kennedy Whelan (Alliston, ON).

The Tigers continued to play deep in the Aigles Bleues end and eventually Klimm took advantage of Janelle Graham's (Dieppe, NB) penalty for a hit to the head, with a great unassisted goal.

The Aigles Bleues two penalties in the first period put the pressure heavily on their goalie Audrey Berthiaume (St-Bruno, QC). By the end of the first period, the Tigers outshot the Aigles Bleues 16-10.

As the second period began, the flow of play was choppy and went end to end. The Tigers began to hit stride, as Annika Rose accelerated down the wing before making a great pass to Meghan Anton (Kitchener, ON), whom left it off for Bobbi Strople (Halifax, NS) to score the third goal of the game.

The Tigers stayed on the accelerator throughout the second period. Brooklyn Paisley (Shawnigan Lake, BC) put away the fourth of the game, with assists coming from Anton and Strople.

Petricca continued to made things look easy, as she stopped all 20 shots that came her way in the first two periods.

As the Tigers began the third period with a 5-0 lead, they looked confident in completing the shutout. That all ended when the Aigles Bleues got one back from a tap in off a rebound. The goal was scored by Katryne Villeneuve (Casselman, ON).

Though the game may have been out of reach for the Aigles Bleues, they continued to press the Tigers in the third period. The Aigles Bleues outshot the Tigers 14 to nine in the third. Petricca was huge for the Tigers as she stopped all 14 shots, finishing the game with a .970 save percentage.

Strople finished the game with a plus three plus minus and her goal and assist earned her the Subway Player of the Game. Honourable mention to Petricca for making 33 stops on 34 shots.

The Tigers continue their home stand as they finish their third home game in three days tomorrow evening. The Tigers are back at the Halifax Forum tomorrow to face the X-Women at 6:30pm. The Aigles Bleues are next in action at the Halifax Forum on Wednesday to take on the Huskies.
