WOLFVILLE, NS - Memorial keeper Sydney Walsh kept the Axewomen at bay and earned the Subway POG as the Sea-Hawks and Acadia battled to a 0-0 draw. Second-year Axewomen Keeper Spencer Skinner was equal to the challenge in earning the shutout.
Despite opportunities by both teams, the game remained in a scoreless deadlock. The Axewomen out-shot the Sea-Hawks 13-10 with most of the Acadia offensive pressure occurring late in the second half. The Seahawks and Axewomen are the 2nd and 3rd highest scoring teams in a tight league which made the 0-0 draw all the more surprising.
Credit was given to Memorial in a tight hard-fought battle, where the Sea-Hawks played yesterday against UPEI before they faced a rested Acadia squad.
"The schedule gives competitive advantages to different teams every week. We were on the wrong end of it a couple of times this year and Memorial would have had to battle through because they played the day before," noted Axewomen head coach Amit Batra.
Rachel Cunningham was named the Acadia Player of the Game for her effort.
"That was a really great game between two really good teams. We keep making progress and there were a lot of positives to take from today. We had our goal scoring chances but you couldn't question our work rate and discipline today so you have to be proud of that. There are no easy games this year and that is a great thing for the League and for our players to have to battle through", commented Amit Batra on his team's play.
While the tie didn't affect the Sea-Hawks position in the standings, the Axewomen fell several slots to fifth spot overall. The Axewomen wrap up the regular season at home next weekend against StFX and UPEI. In the one meeting this year against StFX, Acadia picked up a 1-0 win.
The Sea-Hawks will host Moncton on this coming Friday and Saturday evenings.
