Axewomen hand Capers first loss of the season

WOLFVILLE, N.S. – Despite having to battle into a stiff wind for the second half of play, the Axewomen soccer team picked up a 1-0 win over the first place undefeated Cape Breton Capers.

Assessed a red card at the 28th minute of play, the Capers played short handed for the remaining 62 minutes of the match.

Fourth year striker Meghan Earle (Mt. Pearl, Nfld.) netted the game winner at the 58-minute mark. Jenna Boudreau (Halifax, N.S.) fed Earle a vertical pass into the box and Earle was able to slip the ball past Lysianne Trottier (Barrie, Ont.) for her fifth goal of the season.

Trottier was tested with 11 shots and four landing on goal, while her counterpart Emma Connell (Hampton, N.B.) had two shots on goal. Connell's winning record improves to 6-0-3 while Trottier was handed her first loss at 5-1-0.

The Capers sit in first place in the AUS standings with a 10-1-0 record and host StFX in their last game of the regular season next Saturday afternoon.

The Axewomen improve to 7-0-3 and remain the only undefeated team in the conference yet are third in the AUS standings trailing Memorial. Both Memorial and Acadia will face each other this weekend in St. John's for two games starting on Friday night and ending Saturday afternoon.
