Saint Mary's sweeps Moncton in volleyball

(HALIFAX, NS)—The Saint Mary's University women's volleyball team started the weekend on the right foot with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 27-25) sweep over the visiting Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues on Saturday afternoon in Atlantic university sport volleyball action from the Homburg Centre.

Fifth-year player Erin Smith (Moncton, NB) paced the Huskies and all hitters with 16 kills in the match and was named Subway Player of the Game.

SMU took the first set 25-20 with a 10-6 kill advantage.

Moncton dropped the second set to the Huskies 25-14 as SMU doubled up UdeM in kills 14-7.

The final set went 27-25 for Saint Mary's as SMU had six more kills in the set (16-10).

Christelle Bertin (Beresford, NB) finished with eight kills for UdeM and Pascale Doirin (Caraquet, NB) added five kills while Émilie Landry (McLeod Hill, NB) had four in the loss.

The Aigles Bleues drop to 3-9 on the year.

Anna Watt (Calgary, AB) was the only other hitter besides Smith to have double-digit kills (13) in the match and the SMU second-year player also had 10 digs.

The Huskies improve to 9-3 in conference play.

Both teams return to action on the road Sunday January 21st as Moncton visits the 7-4 Acadia University Axewomen at 2 p.m. and the battle of Halifax continues at 1 p.m. when the Huskies take on the 10-1 and USports No. 5 Dalhousie Tigers.
