CIS No. 7 Varsity Reds escape with 1-1 tie against Acadia

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - A last minute goal on a penalty kick awarded to UNB tied the game at one, allowing the CIS No. 7 ranked Varsity Reds to escape with a 1-1 tie against the fourth place Acadia Axemen.

Acadia took an early 1-0 lead when second year striker Matthew Berrigan (Halifax, N.S) netted the Axemen's only goal in the opening 10 minutes of play. Senior midfielder Michael Wilkinson assist on the goal. It was Berrigan's sixth goal of the regular season.

with 14 shots and seven on goal, the Varsity Reds could not manage to tie the game until the closing minute when third year striker Robbie Park (Glasgow, Scotland) scored on a penalty shot awarded due to a suspected handball.

With the tie, the Axemen remain in fourth place in the AUs standings with a 5-2-5 record, while the Varsity Reds hold onto top spot with a 7-2-3 record and remain one point ahead of the trailing UPEI Panthers.

UNB will host the second place Panthers on Sunday afternoon and the Axemen will hope to cap the season off with a win against the 1-7-3 visiting Moncton Aigles Bleus.
