Claude (Memorial), Mercer (SMU) named AUS Athletes of the Week

Memorial University goalkeeper Leana Claude is the Atlantic University Sport Female of the Week for the week ending Sept. 15, 2024.

Claude helped her Sea-Hawks to a four-point weekend road trip by recording a pair of clean sheets– the first a 1-0 victory over the third-place Acadia Axewomen where she made seven saves, and the second a 0-0 draw against a tough Dalhousie Tigers team.

The Engineering student in her first year of eligibility has started all six games for the Sea-Hawks this season, allowing just one goal per game.

Memorial will have this weekend off before resuming their AUS regular season schedule on Sept. 27 and 29 in road games against Cape Breton and STFX, respectively.

Saint Mary’s University wing Colby Mercer is the Atlantic University Sport Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 15, 2024.

Mercer, a fourth-year forward from Beaverbank, NS, gets the nod for the second straight week after scoring four goals to keep his Huskies atop the AUS standings.

In Friday night’s 3-2 victory over Moncton, Mercer scored all three goals – the last two coming in the final 10 minutes of play to complete the comeback. A day later, Mercer started the scoring in his team’s 3-2 win over UNB.

Mercer leads the AUS with six goals in six games.

His Huskies sit in first place with a 4-2 record, and they will look to stay there this Thursday night when they host the Acadia Axemen at 7:15 p.m.
