UPEI's McCutcheon and Dalhousie's Ngala named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) Ashley McCutcheon from the UPEI Panthers women's hockey team and Nginyu Ngala from the Dalhousie Tigers men's basketball team have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

Ashley McCutcheon of the UPEI Panthers women’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport women’s athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 22, 2023.

A second-year business student from Kitchener, Ont., McCutcheon was instrumental in the second of the Panthers’ back-to-back wins this past week, which clinched UPEI’s spot in the 2023 AUS playoffs.

McCutcheon scored both the game-tying goal and then the game-winning goal in overtime on Saturday as the Panthers took down the U SPORTS no. 7-ranked STFX X-Women 3-2 in Charlottetown.

She was named Subway Player of the Game for her efforts.

Nginyu Ngala of the Dalhousie Tigers men’s basketball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport men’s athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 22, 2023.

A management student in his third year of eligibility from Montreal, Que., Ngala led the Tigers to a two-game sweet of the UNB Reds this past weekend in Halifax.

He scored a career-high 32 points in the Tigers’ 76-64 win Friday, and added 10 rebounds to complete the double-double and earn Subway Player of the Game honours. He went 9-12 in three-point attempts, setting a new Dalhousie record for most three-point field goals made in a single regular season game and is now part of a four-way tie for fifth in the AUS record book.

In Saturday's 72-62 win, he had another double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds and added seven assists and four steals.
