UPEI's MacWilliam and Dalhousie's Sparkes named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

Frances MacWilliam of the UPEI Panthers women’s rugby team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport women’s athlete of the week for the week ending October 16, 2022.

A fifth-year prop from Mill River East, Prince Edward Island, MacWilliam was a force to be reckoned with in the Panthers’ two victories over the Saint Mary’s Huskies last week. She tallied seven conversions during Wednesday’s 66-5 win and recorded a game-high 19 points on a try and seven conversions at Saturday’s 86-0 regular-season closer. On Saturday, she was named Subway Player of the Game.

MacWilliam leaves her mark on the UPEI record books after her dominant week, with her seven conversions tying her for the second-most in a single game in Panthers history (Alysha Corrigan had eight in 2016). Additionally, her 60 points scored during the 2022 season is the second-highest season total in UPEI history (Ashley MacDonald had 66 in 2006) and her 37 career conversions have set a new UPEI record.

MacWilliam and the UPEI Panthers host the STFX X-Women this Thursday at 2pm for the AUS semi-final.

Logan Sparkes of the Dalhousie Tigers men’s swimming team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending October 16, 2022.

A second-year science student from Agassiz, British Columbia, Sparkes led the Tigers to a first-place team finish at the 2022 Amby Legere Invitational swim meet over the weekend. He earned first-place finishes in the 200-metre IM and 400-metre and 800-metre freestyle events and finished second in the 400-metre IM. He also anchored the Tigers to victory in the mixed 400-metre freestyle relay.

Sparkes and the Tigers compete next on October 29 and 30 when Acadia hosts the Jack Scholz Invitational.
