UNB's Shannon and STFX's Centorame named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, NS) After stellar performances on the national stage, U SPORTS gold medallist Lexie Shannon of the UNB REDS and bronze medallist Santino Centorame of STFX's X-Men are the final Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for the 2021-22 season.

Lexie Shannon of the UNB women’s track and field team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending April 3, 2022.

An arts student in her third year of eligibility with the REDS, last weekend Shannon won the women’s triple jump at the 2022 U SPORTS Track and Field Championships, hosted by UNB in Saint John. Her 12.16 metres jump secured the first gold medal at the national championship level in UNB Track and Field history, and just the second overall medal in program history.

Shannon’s U SPORTS gold follows her standout performance at the 2022 Subway AUS Track and Field Championships, where she was named field athlete of the year after capturing gold medals in both triple jump and 60-metre dash events.

Year of eligibility: Fourth
Academic program: Bachelor of Business

Santino Centorame of the STFX men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending April 3, 2022.  

A fourth-year defenseman for the X-Men, Centorame was named a tournament all-star following STFX’s overtime bronze medal win at last weekend’s 2022 U SPORTS men’s hockey championship in Wolfville. A leader both on and off the ice, the team captain scored a goal and had an assist in the X-Men’s three University Cup games, during which they defeated Brock 3-0, fell to Alberta 7-3 and re-grouped to secure their bronze with a 3-2 win over Ryerson.

Last week, Centorame—an AUS first team all-star—was also named a U SPORTS second team All-Canadian for the 2021-22 season.
