Acadia's Anderson and UNB's Masters named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) Paloma Anderson of the Acadia Axewomen basketball team and Javon Masters of the UNB Varsity Reds men's basketball team have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Hometown: Phoenix, Arizona
Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: BA

Paloma Anderson of the U SPORTS no. 4-ranked Acadia Axewomen basketball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 28, 2018.

A fifth-year arts student from Phoenix, Arizona, Anderson broke the Acadia school record for career points previously held by former Axewomen standout Emma Duinker.

Duinker amassed 1,332 points in her five seasons at Acadia from 2007-08 to 2011-12.

In her fourth season with Acadia, Anderson now has 1,332 points for the Axewomen and counting, with six games left to play in the regular season.

The Axewomen travelled to St. John’s, N.L. this past weekend, completing a weekend sweep of the Memorial Sea-Hawks.

In their 91-69 win Saturday, Anderson was named Subway Player of the Game after posting 22 points, 11 rebounds, eight steals, six assists and two blocks.

Sunday, Acadia earned a 90-79 victory over Memorial. Anderson earned Subway Player of the Game nods once again after finishing with a game-high 29 points and 10 rebounds, to go along with four assists and two steals.

Javon Masters of the UNB Varsity Reds is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 28, 2018.

A fifth-year guard from Kitchener, Ont., Masters became the U SPORTS all-time leading scorer while leading UNB to two weekend wins at home over the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The previous all-time career scoring record of 2,282 was held by Boris Bakovic who played four seasons with the Ryerson Rams and a fifth with the Calgary Dinos.

With five games remaining in UNB’s regular season schedule, Masters has now amassed 2,305 career points.

The Varsity Reds topped the Huskies 104-96 Friday night. Masters was named Subway Player of the Game after posting a game-high 39 points to go along with six rebounds and four assists.

Saturday, UNB topped Saint Mary’s 94-85. Masters had nine points, seven assists, four rebounds and two steals.
