Cape Breton's Keough and UNB's Masters named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) Alison Keough of the Cape Breton Capers women's basketball team and Javon Masters of the UNB Varsity Reds men's basketball team have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

Alison Keough of the defending AUS champion Cape Breton Capers is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 14, 2018.

A fifth-year centre from Marion Bridge, N.S., Keough led the Capers in a close overtime loss and a win this past weekend versus the UNB Varsity Reds. The reigning AUS MVP, she also surpassed the 1,500 career points mark.

Friday night, she earned Subway Player of the Game nods posting a game-high 30 points and 13 rebounds, to go along with six assists and a steal, as the Capers fell 90-83 to the Varsity Reds in overtime.

Keough managed another double-double Saturday, with a game-high 21 points and 17 rebounds, as well as four assists, as Cape Breton topped UNB 87-63.

With 1,533 career points to date, she now sits second on the Capers’ all-time scoring list and eighth in AUS all-time scoring.

Following this weekend’s performance, she also moves into second place in AUS all-time career rebounding, with 902—just 24 short of the all-time record held by former Saint Mary’s standout Julie Galipeau.

The Capers have nine games remaining in the regular season.

Javon Masters of the U SPORTS no. 10-ranked UNB Varsity Reds is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 14, 2018.

A fifth-year guard from Kitchener, Ont., Masters led UNB to two weekend wins over the Cape Breton Capers.

In Friday night’s 100-74 win, he posted a game-high 32 points and added a team-high nine rebounds to go along with two steals and two assists. He was named Subway Player of the Game for his efforts.

Saturday, UNB topped Cape Breton 114-93. Masters earned Subway Player of the Game nods for the second consecutive night, scoring a game-high 37 points and adding seven assists, three rebounds and three steals.

Earlier this season, Masters broke the all-time AUS record for career points. Currently sitting at 2,218 with nine games remaining in the regular season, he is fast approaching the unofficial all-time U SPORTS record of 2,282 career points set by Boris Bakovic across four seasons at Ryerson and a fifth at the University of Calgary.
