Memorial's Stewart and StFX's Antoine named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Sydney Stewart of the Memorial Sea-Hawks women's basketball team and Julius Antoine of the StFX X-Men basketball team have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

Sydney Stewart of the Memorial Sea-Hawks women’s basketball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 8 2017.

A fourth-year sociology student in her third year of eligibility from Sarnia, Ont., Stewart was an integral part of two weekend wins over the U Sport No. 8-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies.

The Sea-Hawks handed the four-time reigning AUS champion Huskies their first loss of the regular season Saturday, topping them 66-58 in St. John’s, N.L.

Stewart had a game-high 14 points in the win to go along with six rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.  

Memorial completed their weekend sweep of Saint Mary’s with an 82-73 win Sunday. Stewart had 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in the victory.

With the wins, the Sea-Hawks move into fourth place in the AUS standings. They travel to UNB for two games this weekend.

Julius Antoine of the StFX X-Men basketball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 10, 2017.

A third-year business student in his fourth year of eligibility from Woodbridge, Ont., Antoine played two strong games for the X-Men in two weekend wins.

In Friday’s 86-80 win over Acadia, he posted 12 points, three rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Antoine was then named the Subway Player of the Game in Saturday’s 85-66 win over UNB. He led the X-Men with a game-high 27 points to go along with eight rebounds and five assists.

With the wins, StFX moves into second place in the AUS standings. The X-Men now prepare to host the Cape Breton Capers tonight at 8 p.m.
