Dalhousie's Wilson and UPEI's Mahalak named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Colleen Wilson of the Dalhousie Tigers cross country team and Matt Mahalak of the UPEI Panthers men's hockey team have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week. 

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Name: Colleen Wilson
University: Dalhousie University
Sport: Women’s Cross Country
Hometown: Ancaster, Ont.
Year of eligibility: Fifth
Academic program: Oceanography

Colleen Wilson of the CIS No. 7-ranked Dalhousie Tigers women’s cross country team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Oct. 9, 2016.

In Saturday’s invitational cross country meet hosted by Saint Mary’s and Dalhousie in Halifax, the fifth-year from Ancaster, Ont. claimed individual gold in her third consecutive AUS race.

Wilson also led the Tigers to their third consecutive team win in as many weekends. She completed the course in a time of 22:11.00, more than 50 seconds ahead of the next AUS competitor.

Sport: Men’s Hockey
Hometown: Monroe, Michigan
Year of eligibility: Third
Academic program: BBA

Matt Mahalak of the CIS No. 6-ranked UPEI Panthers men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Oct. 9, 2016.

A third-year business student from Monroe, Michigan, Mahalak made 61 saves in two wins last week.

He stopped 33 shots in Wednesday’s 7-5 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleus in Moncton, N.B. He then made 28 saves Saturday in Charlottetown, P.E.I. as the Panthers topped the reigning CIS champion UNB Varsity Reds 4-3 in a shootout.
