StFX's Normore and UNB's Braes named Subway AUS athletes of the week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Alexa Normore of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women's hockey team and Cam Braes of the UNB Varsity Reds men's hockey team have been named the Subway AUS athletes of the week for their respective performances for this past week.

Alexa Normore of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending March 15, 2015.

A fifth-year human kinetics student from Bedford, N.S., Normore was honoured as a CIS championship all-star and a CIS second team all-Canadian this week as the X-Women (1-2) placed fourth overall at the CIS women’s hockey championship in Calgary.

In StFX’s 4-3 quarterfinal win over Guelph, Normore was named player of the game after she notched an assist and both the game-tying and game-winning (short-handed) goals, allowing the X-Women to advance to the semifinals.

She played strong games in StFX’s 1-0 loss to McGill in the semifinals and their close 2-1 loss to Montreal in the bronze medal game, assisting on the lone StFX goal against Montreal.

Normore wraps up her five-year career with the X-Women as the all-time StFX leading scorer with 205 points in regular season play.

Cam Braes of the UNB Varsity Reds men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending March 15, 2015.

A third-year kinesiology student from Shawnigan Lake, B.C., Braes was an integral part of the Varsity Reds’ success and eventual silver medal finish at the CIS University Cup in Halifax this past week.

Braes posted four goals in Thursday's 6-2 quarterfinal victory over the Windsor Lancers. He picked up another goal on Friday as UNB topped the Guelph Gryphons 5-2 to advance to the gold medal game.

Braes was named to the tournament all-star team following the championship.
