StFX's Downey and UNB's Maillet named Subway AUS athletes of the week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Jenna Downey of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women's hockey team and Philippe Maillet of the UNB Varsity Reds men's hockey team have been named the Subway AUS athletes of the week for their respective performances for this past week.

Jenna Downey of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending March 8, 2015.

A first-year education student in her fifth year of eligibility, Downey was named the most valuable player of the 2015 Subway AUS Women’s Hockey Championship following StFX’s banner win this past Tuesday in Moncton.

The veteran defenceman anchored the StFX blue line, helping lead them to the AUS championship title, as they defeated Moncton in two straight games in the best-of-three final playoff series.

In Monday’s 2-0 win over the Aigles Bleues, Downey assisted on StFX’s first goal.

In their 3-2 double overtime victory on Wednesday, she scored the game-tying goal with only 25 seconds left to play in regulation, forcing the overtime period. She also picked up an assist on StFX’s first goal of the game.

Downey finished the regular season second overall amongst AUS defencemen in scoring this season with 17 points and was named to the AUS first team all-star squad.

Philippe Maillet of the UNB Varsity Reds men’s hockey year is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending March 8, 2015.

A second-year forward from Lachenaie, Que., Maillet was named most valuable player of the 2015 Subway AUS Men’s Hockey Championship this past week.

In Game 1 of the best-of-three championship final series versus Acadia on Monday, he posted four goals in UNB’s 8-2 victory over the Axemen.

On Wednesday, in Game 2, Maillet was named Subway first star of the game following the Varsity Reds’ 4-2 win which earned them their 14th AUS men’s hockey championship banner.

Maillet was also named league MVP Wednesday and a first team AUS all-star following an impressive regular season performance which saw him capture the AUS scoring title with 14 goals and 25 assists for 39 points in 28 games played.
