Dalhousie's Dunn-Suen and O'Brien named Subway AUS athletes of the week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Anna Dunn-Suen of the Dalhousie Tigers women's volleyball team and Kristen O'Brien of the Dalhousie Tigers men's volleyball team have been named the Subway AUS athletes of the week for their respective performances for this past week.

Anna Dunn-Suen of the Dalhousie Tigers women’s volleyball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Feb. 15, 2015.

A second-year science student from Halifax, N.S., Dunn-Suen was named most valuable player of the 2015 Subway AUS women’s volleyball championship this past weekend in Fredericton.

In Saturday’s semifinal match up against the host UNB Varsity Reds, the outside hitter collected a game-high 23 kills and had 17 digs in the Tigers’ 3-2 (25-16, 21-25, 22-25, 25-9,15-12) victory. Dunn-Suen was named the Subway player of the game for her efforts.

She earned Subway player of the game honours for the second time following Sunday’s championship final game versus the Saint Mary’s Huskies, after posting an impressive 14 kills and 17 digs.

The Tigers grabbed the win 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 25-20) and their third consecutive women’s volleyball championship banner. In addition to being named championship MVP, Dunn-Suen was also named to the championship all-star team.

At Thursday night’s awards banquet, she was also named an AUS first team all-star. Dunn-Suen finished second overall in the Atlantic conference this regular season in points per set (with 3.6) and kills per set (with 2.92).

Sport: Men’s Volleyball
Position: Outside hitter
Hometown: Truro, N.S.
Year of eligibility: Third
Academic program: Kinesiology

Kristen O’Brien of the Dalhousie Tigers men’s volleyball team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Feb. 15, 2015.

A third-year kinesiology student from Truro, N.S., O’Brien led the Tigers to a second-straight AUS championship title in their two-game series sweep over the UNB Varsity Reds.

The outside hitter had nine kills, seven digs and three blocks in the Tigers’ 3-1 (15-25, 26-24, 25-12, 25-13) win in Fredericton on Saturday. O’Brien’s solid play in both matches of the Subway AUS men’s volleyball championship earned him championship MVP honours.  

He was also named to the AUS all-star team following a stellar regular season with the Tigers. O’Brien finished second overall in the Atlantic conference in points per set (3.8) and kills per set (3.00) and third in block solos with 19.
