StFX's Normore and UNB's Shantz named Subway AUS athletes of the week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Alex Normore of the StFX X-Women's hockey team and David Shantz of the UNB Varsity Reds men's hockey team have been named the Subway AUS athletes of the week for their respective performances for this past week.

Alex Normore of the St. Francis Xavier X-Women hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 18, 2015.

A fifth-year human kinetics student from Bedford, N.S., Normore tallied six points in two weekend wins for the CIS No. 7-ranked and AUS first-place X-Women.

In Friday’s 5-1 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies, she scored a goal and had an assist. She followed this up with a one-goal, three-assist performance Sunday in StFX’s 4-2 win over St. Thomas, earning Subway player of the game honours.

With the weekend points, Normore also broke the X-Women career scoring record, surpassing the 196 mark set by Brayden Ferguson (2004-09). Second overall in the AUS record book, she currently has 200 career points (78 goals, 122 assists) in 111 games played. She leads the AUS in scoring and is second in the CIS with 27 points on the season. 

Normore is just the fourth player in CIS women’s hockey history to reach the 200-point plateau.

David Shantz of the UNB Varsity Reds men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Jan. 18, 2015.

A fourth-year arts student in his fifth year of eligibility from Hamilton, Ont., Shantz posted a record of 3-0 in net for the CIS No. 2-ranked Varsity Reds in three weekend games versus St. Thomas, St. Francis Xavier and Saint Mary’s.

Shantz made 72 saves on 74 shots on goal for a .973 save percentage and a goals against average of 0.67 over the three games. With the three victories, he improves his record to 15-4 on the season, including wins in his last eight starts. 

On Wednesday, Shantz stopped 25 of 26 shots as UNB topped St. Thomas 6-1. He stopped all 20 shots in Friday’s 3-0 win over StFX, to pick up his first career AUS shutout. Saturday, he made 26 saves on 27 shots as the V-Reds beat the CIS No. 6-ranked Saint Mary’s Huskies 3-1.
