Cape Breton's Blain and StFX's Wesselius named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Karolyne Blain of the Cape Breton Capers women's soccer team and Lee Wesselius of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men's cross country team have been named the Subway AUS athletes of the week for their respective performances for this past week.

Karolyne Blain of the Cape Breton University Capers women’s soccer team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 14, 2014.

A fourth-year science student from Sudbury, Ont., Blain scored a total of five goals in two weekend games. She netted both of CBU’s goals in the first half of Saturday’s eventual 3-2 loss to the first-place UNB Varsity Reds.

Sunday, she managed a hat trick in Cape Breton’s 5-1 win over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues. The reigning AUS most valuable player, Blain currently leads the conference in goals with six this season.

A two-time CIS all-Canadian, she set the CBU single-season goal scoring record last season when she captured the AUS scoring title with 14 goals in 13 games.

Lee Wesselius of the St. Francis Xavier X-Men’s cross country team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male athlete of the week for the week ending Sept. 14, 2014.

A third-year human kinetics student from River Glade, N.B., Wesselius placed first overall at the Acadia Invitational on Saturday, in the first AUS meet of the season. He completed the 8km race in a time of 25:30, leading the X-Men to a first-place team finish with seven runners in the top eight amongst a field of 55 competitors.

Wesselius is a two-time AUS all-star with the defending champion StFX X-Men.
