Moncton's Forget and Acadia's Heelis named Subway AUS Athletes of the Week

(HALIFAX, N.S.) - Gabrielle Forget of the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues women's hockey team and Liam Heelis of the Acadia Axemen hockey team have been named the Subway AUS Athletes of the Week for their respective performances for this past week.

Gabrielle Forget of the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues women’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport female Athlete of the Week.

A first-year human kinetics student from Joliette, Que., Forget’s goaltending this past week throughout the Subway AUS championship best 2-of-3 final series helped Moncton earn their first AUS women’s hockey championship banner since 2008-09.

Forget allowed an average of just 1.25 goals against throughout all three playoff rounds and earned championship most valuable player honours for her efforts.  

She allowed just four goals against throughout the best 2-of-3 championship final series versus the Mount Allison Mounties, posting a shutout in Game 3 in which the Aigles took home the AUS title. The rookie goaltender faced 74 shots and made 70 saves in the three-game final series and was also awarded Subway Player of the game honours for her efforts in Game 3.

Liam Heelis of the Acadia Axemen men’s hockey team is the Subway Atlantic University Sport male Athlete of the Week.

A third-year arts student from Georgetown, Ont., Heelis was named the most valuable player of the Subway AUS men’s hockey championship. Heelis and the Axemen took home the championship banner last night following a 3-1 win in Game 4 of the best 3-of-5 final series versus the Saint Mary’s Huskies.

Heelis posted a league-leading 11 post-season points throughout the semifinal and finals rounds of the playoffs.

He scored five goals, added six assists and had a +4 plus/minus rating throughout eight post-season games. Heelis, also named the league MVP last week, contributed three points in Acadia’s 6-3 Game 1 win on Thursday and a point in last night’s 3-1 Game 4 win which saw the Axemen take the final series 3-1.
